Today is the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing when Apollo 11 touched down at 20:17:40 UTC (4:17pm EST) on July 20th, 1969. You can listen to the whole days events by going to We Choose the Moon.org.
@ Chuck ... i was only 7 years old at the time and don't have much recollection about it. i was to interested in the things that young children are mainly interested in and news, politics, and world events wasn't one of them. my have i changed a lot since those days. now i'm completely fascinated by the history of the '60s and early '70s. i particulary remember how annoyed i would get when the major networks would suspend regular programming in order to air the Watergate proceedings and it bumped a "3 Stooges" movie that i wanted to see. man, i was mad!
We're pretty close to the same age, I take back the old comment. We're young.
I found it so cool to think they were on the MOON!!! They were no longer on Earth. Not profound now but to a 7 year old it is. It is still awe-inspiring though.
It was a great moment. I only hope that our nation will have more great moments.
